Going with the flow – literally

My friends know that over the last couple of years, I’ve worked on trying new things on a regular basis. It’s been fun zip-lining, paddleboarding, pushing the limits of my yoga practice.  However, none of that prepared me for the latest “new thing.”

This risk-averse, control-seeking, Pitta Virgo has found herself on the back of a motorcycle in recent months. You have NO idea what an epic leap this is for me.  Not only must I relinquish control (I’m not even a good car passenger!) but I must resolve myself to not even seeing the road in front of me. (When I do look straight ahead, I only see my reflection and I look like I should be riding a luge!)

So what is it about this new thing that has me hooked?

Reasons to Ride

First, I LOVE being on the bike.  The white noise of the motor, the smells and scenes of the country air are actually quite Zen. Who knew?

Second, as we maneuver through the curvy mountainous roads, I literally MUST go with the flow. To fight it would be unsafe and as effective as spitting into the wind.  I must admit, I especially like the rapid curves from left to right and back again.

Third, I get to see – really see – and discover the beauty of the countryside in my own backyard.  And let’s face it, how many of you can say that you’ve been by Happy Trails Cowboy Church in Hiddenite or have had a cup of coffee at The Coffee Shop in Wilkesboro (they don’t even have a website!) or  have seen the scenic vistas on Brushy Mountain Road?

Lastly, and most importantly, when I’m on the bike, I unplug – completely! I don’t listen to music or even think about the messages coming in on my phone.  I just sit there and let my mind be as free as the open road.
